We were SO excited to be able to host Author Tameka Fryer Brown as we head into February and Black History Month. Ms. Brown is the author of several books and you can find her books and many resources here: https://tamekafryerbrown.com.

Ms. Brown is herself the parent of 3 grown children who all attended Montessori schools, 2 of them through high school. One of the wonderful lessons that she shared with the children is that sometimes, who we think we will be and what job we want to do can change, sometimes many times, and we just never know where life might lead us. Ms. Tameka shared that her journey began, after having studied very hard in college, with a job in medical supplies sales. The job called for a lot of travel, which was great until she started a family. For a time, her job was "mom", and she even worked for a time as an assistant at her children's Montessori school. Eventually, she decided to try her hand at writing picture books for children, and in 2010 she published her first book! She reminded the children that they can do whatever it is in life they want to do, even if it's different from what they set out to do or be. She's a wonderful living example of just exactly that!

The book "That Flag" is a story about 2 elementary friends who experience conflict and a challenge to their friendship when learning about the history connected to the Confederate Flag, which hangs in front of one of their homes. Ms. Tameka read us her book, which the children were already familiar with, and we had an open and honest discussion about the feelings and impressions it left us with.

One student brought a copy of another book authored by Ms. Brown from home for the author to sign. Many children then asked her to sign sticky notes so that they could have her "autograph". The children seemed completely awed to be in the presence of the actual author of books they have read. Many of the children also asked for and received hugs from Ms. Tameka. It was a wonderful visit! Then she was off to Upper Elementary.
