Tiny and mighty - this week AND Upper El! We had such a fun and productive three days to start the school year. The kids were introduced to the poem "In Lak'ech", based on the ancient Mayan philosophy of "I Am You and You Are Me". They have been practicing the poem by reading it daily in Spanish and English and transposing in cursive writing. We've spent time contemplating our personal intentions for the start of the year and our desires for an inclusive and kind community. This is a special, open group of children.

In addition to all of the team-building and good vibes, they dove right into their work. To compliment "In Lak'ech", they were introduced to ancient Mayan civilization and some of their daily life traditions. Each day this week, they made a Mayan inspired recipe. We toasted in our first day with a twist on balché, a honey infused drink that was offered to the gods for peace and strength in work. They also made a citrus salad with cilantro and sea salt and ended with the fan-fave, salsa.

In literature, they began reading, "The One and Only Ivan," by Katherine Applegate. The story is told from the perspective of a gorilla and actually based on the author's account of the real Ivan who lived 27 years in captivity at a mall in Washington before being moved to the Atlanta Zoo.

Math studies have begun with a mix of card work, book work and math fact cards.

It was fun to share baby pictures and try to guess who was who. They were incorporated into a special peace lesson as we reflected on where we began, where we are and where we are going. I'm so excited to be a part of their journey.
