MS Sci - Trees, Skateboards, and Halloweeeeen

Fun times in the MS classroom.

Our tree unit came to an end with the presentation of our Tree Projects. I was so impressed by the effort the class put in to all of the different elements. While their leaf collections were impressive, their poetry, illustration, and research skills were equally awesome, and they tied them together in some excellent products. Make sure to ask to see them if you haven't already!

From here, we get into skateboard science. You may assume that this is simply a thinly-veiled attempt of mine to have a good time riding skateboards during class time (and you'd be right), but we will actually be incorporating some pretty awesome. physics concepts into the mix. as well. Skateboards are very interesting pieces of engineering, as the past 100 years has seen them evolve from steel-wheeled planks with little to no maneuverability into the modern implements of Olympic athletes. The mechanical. and materials engineering of the modern skateboard is surprisingly impressive, and HOW they move relies on grade-appropriate Newtonian physics and. kinematics concepts. PLUS, yeah they're super fun.

If the kids want to skateboard, there are a few key guidelines to consider. Most obviously, they will not be allowed to ride without a helmet. Knee, elbow, and wrist-guards are also encouraged. Sturdy athletic footwear is also a must. (No crocs or anything without good support and traction.) Anytime the kids have ride time after our in-class work, I will be observing and assisting. They are welcome and encouraged to bring their own board from home, but we will have several to share here at school as well. Note that we will also be taking a trip to Mooresville Skatepark after the Thanksgiving break.

Above all, note that NO KIDS WILL BE PRESSURED TO RIDE SKATEBOARDS. They can 100% learn the academic concepts without ever stepping on a board. They can also totally sit down to roll on the boards (butt-boarding) or bring in a scooter or roller skates if that's more their jam. This is just a fun practical way to explore the curriculum and invite the kids to step out of their comfort zone IF they are inclined.

As a final note, I want to give the crew props for the awesome job they did in putting together an epic Halloween festival. They designed great games and crafts, and the younger kids delighted in visiting their stations!
