MS Science: These kids have a lot of heart.

Happy days persist in the middle school classroom this spring.

Following up their diligent efforts in completing their science fair projects and the musical instruments they designed for their sound energy unit, our MS crew has jumped into human anatomy with both feet.

The past month or so has been focused on the circulatory and respiratory systems with an emphasis on their interdependence and interconnectedness. After conducting a heart rate lab and learning the key physiology and terms associated with those systems, we designed board games to model the path of blood, oxygen, and carbon dioxide from the heart to the lungs and throughout the body. These partner projects were not only fun and informative to design, but also to play!

This week, we have been reviewing terminology as well as learning about the illnesses and ailments which can affect these systems as well as their causes and treatments. We also conducted an in-class sheep heart dissection which certainly brought our recent studies home. Icky though it can be, the kids did a great job keeping their cool throughout this process.

In the background, we have also been developing a special project for our school art auction. Every student has been instrumental in developing this piece, and we are pretty sure you'll dig it.

Note that our circulation and respiration test will be in class on Tuesday, 4/29.

Also note that on 5/5 our class will be heading to Yokohama Tire to meet with Mr. Kahrs's team and learn about the practical applications of engineering in the workplace. We still need a driver to help us out with this trip, so please let me know if you can help! (The facility is on Bailey Rd in Cornelius.)
