Hi everyone!
In the last couple of weeks we enjoyed some wonderful spring weather that got everyone excited for the warmer days ahead. But this past week, we found ourselves back in chilly winter temps! No need to worry though. We’re still keeping that spring energy going at school!
Last week, our Lower Elementary students began exploring the magic of seeds and healthy soil. Our Kindergarten and 1st graders kicked things off by learning about the parts of a seed, then dove right in by planting two varieties of lettuce, collards, and kale. These plants will not only be used for cooking in class but also shared throughout our community! The excitement is contagious, and I can't wait to see how proud the students will feel as they watch their plants grow over the next few months.
Meanwhile, our 2nd and 3rd graders were busy measuring the soil temperature in our garden beds and comparing results. They even took readings in different spots like the center of the bed and near the stone walls. After analyzing the data, they discovered that the soil was warmer near the edges. But why? The stones act as insulators, which led to an interesting discussion about thermal mass and how different materials hold heat.
Needless to say, it was a fun week of learning and getting our hands dirty and we're looking forward to watching our plants grow!

Stay tuned to see all the exciting things our students will grow to fill our greenhouse and garden beds! Some plants will be used for cooking, others will help create products for our farmers market, and some will be a special treat for our pollinators!
