Our unit on embryonic development has come to an end and making candles was a great way to celebrate (candles were originally used to determine viable chicken eggs). Making stuff is fun, but it also teaches us to be creative with what we have. Reusing and repurpose helps move us in the direction of zero waste. Students learned how to make hand-dipped candles and also how to turn spent candles into new ones. Learning about candle making also was a science lesson of melting point in action as we turned solid paraffin wax into liquid. We also discussed the melting points of other materials used for candle making.
We have our fingers crossed for 6 cute chicks to emerge from their eggs tomorow. To be continued….
