This week’s focus was on why stream restoration is necessary. We discussed how streams are altered to accommodate human use, such as stream relocation and vegetation loss. Students learned about the consequences of human impact to stream health. The terms downcutting, undercutting, riffles, runs, and pools were introduced and will be evaluated in more detail in the coming week. We concluded by talking about what goes into planning a stream restoration project and how to evaluate its success.
