Welcome back to the loft after a long break for all the holidays! It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks - a week of school .... wait .... not really bc snow! Except no snow. Then MLK Day and preparation for conferences and ...... wait ..... snow!


While it has been a time of stops and starts, we have been quite productive. In history, we are moving towards the Industrial Revolution. We'll spend a bit of time creating a class timeline to have a basic understanding of how we traveled from 1783 - the end of the American Revolution - to roughly a hundred years later and the development of the Industrial Revolution.


In English, students are either reading The Hound of the Baskervilles or The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. Each book gives students a window into the late 19th century - one set in England and one in the Americas.


In sustainability, students have been assigned a company to research. The project entails creating a board game that answers the question: How can we increase production while decreasing our energy footprint? Students are learning about B-Corps and alternative fuel innovation. They take those elements and incorporate them into their board game. The game must directly connect to their particular company. So.... an example would be - How can Nucor Steel Company produce and transport more steel to customers while decreasing their energy footprint? Since energy is a huge contributor to greenhouse gases, by developing sustainable energy sources, companies reduce their carbon footprint and have a new source for increased energy needs. We are in the planning stages, so we'll keep you updated!
